Stephen Vogt Provides Brayan Rocchio Update After Exiting Guardians Game

The Cleveland Guardians received a concerning injury scare Saturday when Brayan Rocchio exited their 12-6 win over the Athletics with left leg tightness.

Rocchio left in the fifth inning after making a difficult play at shortstop. The Guardians shortstop ranged into the hole to field a ground ball from Brian Serven and made a strong throw to first base to end the inning.

Rocchio appeared to feel something on the play and did not return for the bottom of the inning. Angel Genao replaced him at shortstop.

After the game, Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said the team would have more information Sunday.

“We’ll know more tomorrow,” Vogt said.

Rocchio finished 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored before leaving the game. The 25-year-old has been a regular part of Cleveland’s lineup throughout the season, appearing in 148 games.

He entered Saturday batting .250 with 13 home runs, 70 RBI and 20 stolen bases while posting a .312 on-base percentage and .381 slugging percentage.

The timing of the injury is notable with Cleveland in the middle of the American League Central race. The Guardians improved to 80-75 with Saturday’s win and maintained their one-game lead over the Chicago White Sox.

Genao stepped in at shortstop following Rocchio’s departure and could see additional playing time if Rocchio is forced to miss time. However, the Guardians have not announced that Rocchio will require an injured-list stint.

For now, Cleveland will wait for further evaluation before determining Rocchio’s availability. Vogt’s next update should provide a clearer picture of whether the shortstop can return to the lineup during the final week of the regular season.
