Chelsea Green Reveals WWE Return Forced Her to Put Family Plans On Hold: ‘It’s a Hard Stop’

Chelsea Green has revealed that her decision to return to WWE forced her and husband Matt Cardona to put their plans to start a family on hold. The 35-year-old WWE star opened up about the difficult decision while discussing her career, her future with Cardona and the reality of trying to balance professional wrestling with motherhood.

Green and Cardona had been moving closer to having children before WWE came calling again. The opportunity to return was significant enough that the couple decided together that Green should pursue it rather than wonder later whether she had given up on an opportunity she still wanted.

Speaking with Katie Nolan alongside Cardona, “The Hot Mess” said:

“That was it. I can’t wait for kids. So, it was going to be before I got called back to WWE and then we kind of had to put a pause for the old dream and all, you know.”

Green explained that the physical demands of wrestling make pregnancy different from stepping away from a conventional career. For her, becoming pregnant would mean putting her in-ring career on hold, which is why she has also been working toward establishing herself in another entertainment industry.

“It’s hard because with what we do for a living, like, I can imagine that’s a hard stop. It’s a hard stop. And I feel like I haven’t broken into Hollywood yet to be able to act in the meantime.”

That Hollywood ambition has become part of Green’s longer-term plan. She wants to build enough of an acting resume that she can take time away from wrestling when she eventually starts a family without feeling like she has completely stepped away from her professional ambitions.

“So that’s what I’m trying to do now. I’m trying to build a resume that allows me to stop, have kids, and then go back to what I want to do, whether that’s wrestling or go back into acting. Like, I don’t know.”

Green also made it clear that Matt Cardona has not pressured her into making a decision. Instead, she appreciated having the freedom to figure out what she wants her next chapter to look like.

“I don’t know. But I’m out. That’s the thing. I’m glad that Matt’s giving me time to figure it out.”

Her comments come during one of the biggest stretches of Green’s wrestling career. After putting her family plans aside to make the most of her WWE opportunity, she has now reached the championship level.

Chelsea Green and Matt Cardona Have Both Returned to WWE

Green originally returned to WWE in 2023 after being released by the company in 2021. Her second run quickly developed into a breakout period, with her eccentric character, comedic timing and partnership with Piper Niven helping her become a regular presence on television.

Her rise reached another level at SummerSlam 2026, when she won the five-woman ladder match to become the Interim WWE Women’s Champion. “The Hot Mess” later explained that she had wanted to start a family years earlier, but she and Cardona agreed that she should return to WWE first so she would not carry resentment toward their future family.

Cardona also returned to WWE at the start of 2026 after spending several years working outside the company. The former Zack Ryder became part of the SmackDown roster and reunited with Green on WWE television, but his latest run has been interrupted by injury.

Matt Cardona tore his triceps during a match taped for WWE Main Event in August and has been out of action since. Before the injury, he had already been involved in Green’s storyline, including defending her during a confrontation with Gunther on SmackDown.

For Green and Cardona, both are now navigating major changes in their careers while still thinking about what they want personally. Green’s latest comments make clear that having children remains part of their future, even if the couple’s timeline has changed.
