Blue Jays Make Pitching Decision for Rangers Series Finale

The Toronto Blue Jays have made their pitching decision for Sunday’s series finale against the Texas Rangers, turning to Spencer Miles to start at Globe Life Field.

Hazel Mae reported the decision Saturday night as Toronto prepares for another bullpen game. Miles has worked primarily as a reliever this season but has also made seven starts.

The Blue Jays will face Jacob deGrom, giving Toronto a challenging matchup as it tries to close the series on a positive note.

Miles has been one of the more productive arms in Toronto’s pitching staff this season. The right-hander enters Sunday with a 6-2 record, a 2.65 ERA and 87 strikeouts across 91.2 innings in 47 appearances.

He has also made seven starts while establishing himself as an option for longer outings. Miles enters the matchup with a 14-game scoreless streak after throwing two scoreless innings against the Detroit Tigers on Sept. 16.

Toronto’s decision comes as the club continues to navigate a depleted rotation. Trey Yesavage remains on the 15-day injured list with a knee issue, while Jameson Taillon is also sidelined.

Spencer Arrighetti had been considered for a bulk role in Sunday’s game but was used earlier in the week during Toronto’s 10-1 loss to Detroit. That left manager John Schneider with another decision to make for the Rangers finale.

Texas will counter with deGrom, who enters Sunday with an 11-9 record, a 3.79 ERA and 194 strikeouts this season.

The Rangers improved to 78-77 after beating Toronto 6-2 on Saturday, while the Blue Jays dropped to 76-79. Toronto will now turn to Miles and its bullpen to finish the series before beginning its next road trip.
