The woman was taken into custody outside the complex after multiple people called 911 on Saturday afternoon to report that a vehicle had driven onto soccer fields and struck several adults and children during a youth game, the Wichita Police Department said.

The department said its preliminary investigation indicates the woman had parked her Chevrolet pickup in a parking space near the soccer fields before it drove onto one of the fields. Two of the woman’s children were inside the pickup when the crash happened, while another child was playing soccer on another field at the complex.

Two people, 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both of McPherson, Kansas, were struck and pronounced dead at the scene. Ten people injured in the crash were hospitalized with noncritical injuries and are expected to recover, WPD said. They include:

  • A 5-year-old girl
  • A 5-year-old boy
  • Two 8-year-old boys
  • A 9-year-old girl
  • A 28-year-old woman
  • A 32-year-old man
  • A 59-year-old woman
  • A 65-year-old woman
  • A 68-year-old man

Police said they interviewed the driver and more than 30 witnesses to the incident, including the two children who were inside the pickup at the time of the crash. They confirmed Saturday night that the woman did not have any warrants for her arrest and that she did have a valid driver’s license.

The department said that after consulting with Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett’s Office, the woman was released pending the results of toxicology testing and a mechanical examination of the vehicle. No charges have been filed against her.

The DA’s Office said Monday that it plans to conduct “an initial review of the case” later this week.

“The office will provide additional information after that review is complete,” an email says.

“We know this tragedy has affected many people throughout our community, and we want those families to know they are not alone,” Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said in a news release. “Our officers and investigators will continue working to understand exactly what happened.”
