Smoke alarms went off around 7 a.m. Sunday at Dover Baptist Church in Shelby, and videos on social media show towering pillars of orange flame eventually burst through the roof.
The congregation learned of the fire at 8:11 a.m. Sunday, when church officials posted a dire note on Facebook: “No services today. Pray for our church. Our building is currently on fire.”
Four hours later, the building was largely gutted, but the scorched front doors remained, along with the crucifix hanging above them, photos show.
“Our building is gone, but the church is not!” church officials wrote in a social media.
“We ask that everyone stay away from the building and the premises due to the fragility of the walls that remain. They are unstable and are hazardous.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but foul play is not suspected, church officials said.

“The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported,” the Cleveland Volunteer Fire Department reported in a Facebook post.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the congregation, leadership, and entire church family of Dover Baptist Church during this difficult time.”
Congregations across the region sent messages of support to the church, including many who welcomed Dover Baptist members to their buildings for Sunday services. Some offered help and guidance in rebuilding the church.
“The church is not a building, God’s people are His church,” Carla M. Beam wrote on the church’s Facebook page.
Dover Baptist Church is about a 50-mile drive west from uptown Charlotte.
