Traffic alert: Lanes closing for work on a new FIU pedestrian bridge

The Florida Department of Transportation is building a new pedestrian bridge near Florida International University.

The new bridge is at the same spot as the almost-completed one that collapsed in 2018. It connected the FIU campus to the surrounding the Sweetwater area, and collapsed on Southwest Eighth Street, killing six people.

The state unveiled designs for a new bridge in 2022, and now is working on construction, canopy installation and architectural work. The project is scheduled to be finished early next year.

Meanwhile, while work continues, lanes on Southwest Eighth Street at 109th Avenue, and Southwest 109th Avenue from Seventh Terrace to Sixth Street will close intermittently.

From Sunday through Thursday nights, lanes may be closed from 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., and on Friday and Saturday nights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Lanes in both directions on Southwest Eighth Street will be “shifted south to create a work zone on the north side of the roadway. The number of lanes will remain the same,” the FDOT project website says.

Brief lane closures may occur daily on Southwest Eighth Street between 109th and 112th avenues to “safely accommodate crane lifting operations,” the project page says. “These closures will be short in duration, and traffic will resume immediately after each lift is completed.” t

Here are other road detours to note across Miami-Dade and Broward:

Miami-Dade County

• Miami: Along Biscayne Boulevard, one southbound or northbound lane will close from Northeast 61st to 64th streets between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and at overnight between 11:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. One lane in both directions will also close along the boulevard from Northeast 64th Street to Sixth Avenue between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and at night from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.
• North Miami: On Northeast 135th Street from Northwest Second Avenue to Northeast 17th Avenue/Tressler Street, lanes will close. Easbound lane closures will occur from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. when the school zone is inactive. When the reduced speed limits in the school zones are active, lanes will close from 10:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. and from 4:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Westbound lanes will close from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. when the school zones are inactive. When the reduced speed limits in the school zones are active, lanes will close from 5 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. and from 9:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
• Coral Way: On Coral Way from Southwest 22nd to 17th avenues and from Southwest 12th Avenue to Brickell Avenue, at least one lane will close on weekdays, nights and weekends from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Additional closures for stormwater drainage work will occur from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday nights.
• Downtown Miami: Port Boulevard from Biscayne Boulevard to PortMiami will also have lane closures. One or two lanes will close from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Tuesdays through Thursdays on Port Boulevard. On Biscayne Boulevard, one or two lanes will close from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Sundays through Thursdays, and from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Broward County

• Wilton Manors: The northbound and southbound I-95 Express Lanes between Oakland Park Boulevard and Sample Road will close nightly from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. The closure is expected to be completed on Thursday, Oct. 1.
• Pompano Beach: Northbound and southbound I-95 will have two outside lanes closed between Sample Road and Southwest 10th Street from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. The work is expected to be completed on Thursday, Oct. 1.
• Deerfield Beach: Southwest 10th Street between South Powerline Road and Southwest 30th Avenue will have up to two lanes closed overnight from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 14 and Tuesday, Sept. 15. The first lane will close at 8:30 p.m. and the second lane will close at 10:30 p.m., reopening at 5:30 a.m. On Wednesday, Sept. 16 and Thursday, Sept. 17, up to two left-turn lanes on Southwest 10th Street at South Powerline Road will close overnight from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
• Davie: I-75 from Griffin Road to Southwest 14th Street may have one lane closed nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Royal Palm Boulevard at I-75 may also have one lane closed nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and additional shoulder closures are permitted.
