Deputies say on Oct. 3, around 9:40 p.m., Naquon Jahrell Fagan, Devorise Carl Johnson, and three other men arrived at the Aliro Apartment Complex at 14040 Biscayne Blvd and waited for Eddrick Bethune, 22, to leave the building.

Around midnight, Bethune walked into the parking lot, where the men approached him in a gray 2026 Toyota Camry equipped with flashing blue and red lights, according to Fagan and Johnson’s arrest affidavits.

The driver and front passenger, armed with guns, exited the car wearing baseball caps, long-sleeved black shirts with “POLICE” printed on the back and black pants, investigators say. They forced Bethune to the ground and handcuffed him, and took his apartment keys and cellphone and tossed them near the Camry. A third man got out of the car, picked up the cellphone, and threw it across the parking lot before retrieving the keys and signaling for the rest of the men in the car to get out.

Fagan, Johnson and an unidentified man entered the apartment building and used the Bethune’s keys to get inside the apartment, authorities say. Surveillance video showed two of the men entering the bedroom. At the same time, another pointed a gun at a sofa in the living room, where a man was sitting, according to the affidavits. The man on the sofa stood up and armed himself with an AK-47-style rifle, deputies say.

Johnson and the man raised their guns at each other. The man shot Johnson multiple times as Johnson also fired at him, according to the affidavits. At some point, Fagan and the third unidentified man also started shooting. But with no clear escape route, the accused trio jumped from a third-story bedroom window in an attempt to flee, authorities said. Investigators noted that Johnson’s blood and broken glass were found on the apartment’s floors, walls, curtains and blinds.

While a shootout was happening inside the apartment, the driver and passenger of the Toyota Camry were forcing Bethune into the car as he tried to escape, investigators say. Surveillance video showed the other three running back to the car. Johnson was dropped off at Jackson North Medical Center.

Bethune was driven in the Camry to the area of Southwest 216th Street and 189th Avenue, where he was shot multiple times and killed, according to authorities. The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled his death a homicide.

In an attempt to destroy evidence, the men set the Camry on fire near Southwest 248th Street and 157th Avenue, authorities say.

Johnson, 21, was arrested on Oct. 15 after being discharged from HCA Aventura Hospital. Fagan was arrested Thursday.

Investigators say Fagan, 25, rented a 2026 Toyota Camry from Oct. 2 to Oct. 4, according to a rental agreement. Cellphone records and surveillance footage helped investigators track Fagan’s movements.

During a search of the Camry, a tag for gloves purchased at Family Dollar was found. Surveillance footage from the store shows Fagan buying black gloves hours before Bethune was killed, according to his arrest affidavit. Cellphone location data also placed Fagan’s device in the area at the time of the purchase.

The footage also shows Fagan using the rented Camry during the purchase, according to the arrest affidavits. Investigators say that surveillance video of the kidnapping shows a man wearing black gloves getting out of the same vehicle.

On Wednesday, a search warrant was issued for Fagan’s home where he was detained. He was taken to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Homicide Bureau for questioning, but deputies say he chose not to talk.

Fagan and Johnson are charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping, attempted first-degree murder, kidnapping with a weapon or firearm, shooting a deadly missile, armed robbery with a firearm, falsely impersonating an officer resulting in death and armed burglary with assault or battery,

Johnson is being held at the Miami-Dade County Pretrial Detention Center, and Fagan is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, both on no bond. Both are represented by attorneys with the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office.
