He also intentionally crashed the stolen truck into an unmarked sheriff’s office vehicle during the pursuit, according to his arrest report.
The incident kicked off after a detective in an unmarked vehicle was patrolling the Dadeland Mall parking lot around 8:30 p.m. looking for car thieves, the sheriff’s office said.
While near Saks Fifth Avenue, the detective came upon a silver Chevy Silverado 1500 with no license plate and a Bomnin Chevrolet license plate border on the back. The detective saw a man underneath the truck, which had its driver’s side door open, according to an arrest report. The deputy made a U-turn and saw the man, who deputies say is 49-year-old Brenton Burke, kneeling under the truck’s steering column and pulling wires, the arrest report states.
Burke then drove off toward North Kendall Drive. The deputy followed him and turned on his emergency lights trying to make him pull over, according to the report.
But, Burke kept going, turning into oncoming traffic on Southwest 77th Avenue. The detective and a colleague, both in unmarked Dodge Ram pickups, turned off their emergency lights and radioed other deputies about where Burke was heading, according to the report.

While searching the area, two other detectives spotted the Chevy parked at Southwest 64th Court and 88th Street. They got out of their truck, wearing vests identifying them as sheriff’s office deputies, and Burke sped off toward the cul de sac on Sixth Court, according to the report.
When Burke reached the end of the cul de sac, he made a U-turn and “intentionally collided” with the deputies’ car, the report states.
He sped west on Southwest 88th Street before getting onto State Road 826, heading north, according to the report. Deputies, including a helicopter crew, pursued Burke, who got onto State Road 836 East, exiting onto Northwest 45th Avenue toward the Miami International Airport employee parking lot, where he crashed into a fence separating the lot from the road at Northwest 18th Street and 42nd Court, the report states.
Deputies arrested him after he crashed, according to the report.
The deputy who first saw Burke in the truck contacted the manager at Bomnin Chevrolet who confirmed the wires Burke was pulling were to the pickup’s Lojack anti-theft tracking device. Using the Lojack app, the deputy determined Burke took the truck from the fifth floor of the dealership’s parking garage, according to the report.
Burke was booked into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on several felonies, including aggravated battery on law enforcement officer, grand theft auto, fleeing and eluding police and criminal mischief. As of Friday morning, a judge had not set bond on the aggravated battery and grand theft auto charges. He is being held on a total of $5,000 bond on the other charges, jail records show.
