NFL Announces Punishment for Caleb Williams Incident Before Vikings Game

Chicago enters the NFC North matchup after an impressive 59-37 win over the Carolina Panthers, while Minnesota also opened the season with a victory, beating the Green Bay Packers 39-22. The winner will move to 2-0 and take sole possession of first place in the division.
Williams led Chicago’s offensive dominance in Carolina. He threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 65 yards and two more scores. Williams also became the first player in NFL history to finish a game with at least 269 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, 65 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns while completing at least 72% of his passes without a turnover.
As the Bears look to stay undefeated, the NFL has announced punishment stemming from an incident involving Williams in Week 1.
Panthers defensive tackle Derrick Brown was fined $17,911 for a late hit on Williams, according to the league’s official Week 1 accountability report. The incident occurred with 4:31 remaining in the third quarter and was classified as a hit on a quarterback.

The penalty came at a costly point in the game. Chicago had faced second-and-20, but Brown’s late hit gave the Bears an automatic first down instead of forcing them into a difficult third-down situation. Chicago then scored three plays later on D’Andre Swift’s 1-yard touchdown run to take a 38-31 lead.
Brown took responsibility for the mistake after the game. The Panthers defensive tackle also committed an offsides penalty that wiped out a potential interception, and he acknowledged that his penalties contributed to 14 Chicago points.
After an impressive offensive performance, Williams faces a much tougher challenge against Minnesota. The Vikings blitzed on 78.3% of dropbacks in their Week 1 win. Williams has faced Minnesota four times in his career, throwing for 934 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in those starts.
The Bears and Vikings kick off Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at Soldier Field, with the game airing on Fox.
