Miami TV anchor Louis Aguirre is recovering after a ‘freak gym accident’

A routine workout earlier this month turned into a tough, late summer medical ordeal for Louis Aguirre.

Over the weekend, the WPLG-Local 10 anchor revealed on Instagram he suffered a “freak gym accident,” tearing more than 75 percent of his tricep tendon while lifting weights on Aug. 7.

“Last rep. Last set. Incline barbell press. My left arm suddenly buckled, I heard and felt a POP and my arm basically turned into a noodle. Not exactly how I planned to end the workout,” said the post, which added that surgery a week later to reattach his triceps tendon was successful.

Among the pictures in the carousel is the TV journalist at Baptist Health wearing a cast. Another graphic photo (trigger warning) shows a snippet from the operation he had a week after his unfortunate trip to the gym.

Now that the hard part is over, the 59-year-old Aguirre just has to give his body time to heal and get used to his temporary new normal. He’ll do so with his signature cheeky sense of humor.

“I am on the mend, convalescing, and following doctor’s orders,” Aguirre told the Miami Herald on Monday. “I’m already going a little stir crazy. But I told myself, ‘You were going at a pretty fast pace. Now you’re going to have to sit your butt down.’”

The Belen Jesuit grad can still text and email if you send well wishes his way.

“I’ve always been a hunt-and-pecker,” the Miami native said, laughing. “I can type with one hand.”

Aguirre said he did notice a few symptoms like a sore elbow before the incident, but brushed them off. Doctors later told him he had tendonitis that went unchecked. The condition eventually turned serious when Aguirre put too much pressure on it that day — 185 pounds.

“Not my most graceful moment,” he recalled. “I removed myself from the machine in pain, walked out of there hoping there was no video and drove myself to the ER.”

As for when Aguirre will be back behind the news desk: Recovery should take about three weeks. Until then, Local 10 colleagues Jenise Fernandez, Glenna Milberg and Calvin Hughes will rotate and cover for him on newscast duty, Aguirre reports.

The Emmy winner is so hopelessly devoted to his job, especially the environmental beat, he can’t wait to get off the couch. He jokes he’d be back to the grind in a heartbeat if it weren’t for that “unfashionable” cast.

“As far as being presentable on the air, the verdict’s still out,” Aguirre said. “I can’t get my arm through long sleeves. Miami is a progressive town, but I’m not sure we are ready to see an anchor in a sleeveless T-shirt!”
