The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, which happened around 7 p.m. near the 4200 block of the Davie Road Extension, BSO said in a Tuesday statement. FDLE is often asked to investigate officer-involved shootings but not without a request from a local agency.

Members of the BSO Gang Task Force and Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response Unit were working to find Napolian Marquez Powell, 27, of Lauderhill. He was wanted on warrants on charges of fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement, and he was the subject of a DNA warrant in a firearm investigation, BSO said.

Detectives found Powell inside a white 2026 Tesla at a Wawa gas station near the 6300 block of Stirling Road, BSO said. Powell ran across the street.

Deputies followed and tried to take him into custody, and he resisted, BSO said. During an altercation, deputies “attempted to de-escalate the situation by taking a tactical retreat and repeatedly ordered Powell to surrender his gun.”

“Fearing for their safety, deputies discharged their weapons, striking Powell,” BSO said, adding he died in a McDonald’s parking lot.

The Broward Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine Powell’s cause of death. There were six involved deputies, who were not identified, and they have been placed on administrative assignment while Internal Affairs reviews the incident, per BSO policy.

In Broward County, Powell pleaded guilty or no contest to a series of felony charges, including drug offenses and carrying a concealed firearm, court records show.
