Update: Martin Garcia, Walter Rodriguez Sidelined With Injuries Following Churchill Spill

Jockey Cristian Torres reported Saturday night via X that he was sore but had no broken bones after Saturday’s six-horse spill in Race 2 at Churchill Downs that also sent jockeys Martin Garcia and Walter Rodriguez to the hospital.

Torres was released from University of Louisville Hospital on Saturday night, Daily Racing Form reports, and took off his Sunday mounts.

Garcia suffered a rib injury, according to his agent, Jake Romans, and will likely miss several weeks. Rodriguez had concussion-like symptoms and is expected to be sidelined for about a month, according to his agent Cliff Collier.

The spill in the 6 1/2 -furlong maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds occurred on the far turn when Torres’ mount Lutkenhaus sustained a catastrophic left front leg injury, causing five other horses to fall and lose their riders.

Garcia was aboard Steve Wood, and Rodriguez was riding Shacklebot, who was transported off the track via the equine ambulance, according to the Equibase chart.

Lutkenhaus was humanely euthanized following evaluation by on-track veterinarians, according to Dr. Will Farmer, Churchill Downs Inc. Equine Medical Director. The other five horses returned to the barn area.
