Steelers Excelled in One Massive Area in Week 5 Victory Over Colts
The Pittsburgh Steelers defense has taken criticism for its perceived lack of pressure and inconsistent coverage in the secondary. However, the unit is still working through several issues in the defensive backfield. Despite those concerns, the Steelers excelled in one critical area during their Week 5 victory over the Indianapolis Colts: red-zone defense. That proved to be an underrated difference-maker in Pittsburgh’s 34-22 win.

The defense delivered key stops in the red zone, while the Steelers offense made significant strides in the same area. With Jaylen Warren dominating the game, Pittsburgh’s red-zone efficiency got somewhat lost in the shuffle. However, that complementary effort played a key role in the Steelers improving to 3-2 on the season.
Red-Zone Defense Was Sharp
The Colts reached the Steelers’ red zone three times on Sunday, but Indianapolis struggled to finish its drives. The Colts converted just one of those three trips into a touchdown, and even that score required a fourth-and-goal conversion by the narrowest of margins. Tight end
The Steelers defense has been stout in the red zone throughout the season. Pittsburgh ranks tied for sixth in the NFL, allowing opponents to convert just 50% of their red-zone trips into touchdowns. At home, that figure drops to 40%. The defense hasn’t been perfect, but it has consistently delivered when the field shrinks and every stop matters most.
Steelers Complemented Their Defense With Red-Zone Offense
Unlike their defensive counterparts, the Steelers offense hasn’t been as effective in the red zone this season. Through five weeks, Pittsburgh ranks 21st in the NFL with a 54.55% red-zone touchdown rate. However, Aaron Rodgers and the offense delivered when it mattered against Indianapolis, connecting with Pat Freiermuth for two touchdowns on the team’s two red-zone trips.

Freiermuth has emerged as one of Rodgers’ favorite targets near the goal line. All four of his touchdowns this season have come in the red zone, making him a valuable weapon in an area where the Steelers need consistent production.
In a 12-point game, two additional red-zone touchdowns for Indianapolis could have made the contest much closer and given the Colts momentum. The same holds true for Pittsburgh: without converting both of its red-zone opportunities into touchdowns, the Steelers could have surrendered some of their advantage.
Instead, Pittsburgh’s defense limited Indianapolis’ scoring opportunities while the offense capitalized on its own. That complementary performance helped secure the Week 5 victory, and the Steelers will look to carry that red-zone momentum into their Week 6 road matchup against Tampa Bay.
