Shooter who killed man at Homestead market is arrested, sheriff’s office says

A man was arrested Wednesday for firing nearly a dozen rounds at a man, who died outside a Homestead market, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said.

Shortly after midnight on Aug. 18, Homestead police officers were sent to a SpotShotter alert outside Valentines Market, 636 SW 6th Ave., the sheriff’s office said in an arrest affidavit.

Officers found an unresponsive man who was lying on the sidewalk in front of the store and had gunshot wounds, the sheriff’s office said. He died around 14 minutes after the shots were fired, and officers found 11 9mm casings near his body.

Thanks to an eyewitness and video surveillance footage, investigators determined the shooter cased the area on an electric bike before approaching the man from the back of the building and repeatedly shooting him, according to the sheriff’s office. The shooter then fled.

The shooter, who was identified as Kentreal Smith, 37, of Florida City, was arrested at his home on Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said. There was an electric bike in his living room with a 9mm gun in his bike pouch, according to the arrest affidavit.

When Smith was interviewed by authorities, he allegedly “confessed to his involvement in the homicide.”

Smith is charged with second-degree murder with a weapon and was being held Thursday with bond to be set at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, jail records show. He also had a $28,000 bond in connection with a separate drug case. Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office General Counsel Guy Robinson said “we have no comment at this time.”
