Philadelphia Eagles Updated QB Depth Chart Following Andy Dalton Trade

Dalton beat out Tanner McKee in training camp to land the backup role behind starter Jalen Hurts to start the season. However, he was demoted to third-string after throwing a costly interception in the End Zone against the Chicago Bears in Week 3, and now his tenure with the Eagles is officially over.

Eagles QB Depth Chart After Release of Andy Dalton

With Dalton now out of the picture, rookie Cole Payton will now slide into the role of third-string quarterback behind McKee and Hurts. Here’s what the new-look depth chart looks like:

  • QB1: Jalen Hurts
  • QB2: Tanner McKee
  • QB3: Cole Payton

Moving on from Dalton makes sense for Philadelphia, as there’s really no reason to have four active QBs on the roster, especially when the roster has so many other areas that could use some added depth.

At this point it remains to be seen if Dalton will land anywhere else, or if we’ve already seen the last of him on an NFL field.

Eagles Have to Hope That Jalen Hurts Stays Healthy

The depth behind Hurts at quarterback shouldn’t necessarily provide fans with a ton of confidence. McKee has had some solid flashes in the past, but he’s largely been underwhelming, especially in the preseason this year. Meanwhile, we haven’t seen anything from Payton at the professional level. In other words, Eagles fans just have to hope that Hurts can remain healthy throughout the season.

Hurts appeared on Philadelphia’s final injury report before the game against Jacksonville with a calf injury, but he was listed as a full participant on Friday. So hopefully it’s nothing serious, because the Eagles have some shaky depth behind him.
