Nasty weather, disabled plane causes travel delays in South Florida

One week after a deadly cargo-plane crash in Miami, the smashed up plane remains on one of Miami International Airport’s runways. That, plus some afternoon thunderstorms, snarled airport operations on Sunday evening.

Travelers at Miami International Airport faced around 320 flight delays and 16 cancellations on Sunday, according to FlightAware. Departures to MIA were delayed on average more than three hours on Sunday due to a “disabled aircraft on the runway,” according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The ground delay advisory remains in effect through at least 11:29 p.m.

Miami International Airport was ranked the third-worst airport in the country in terms of delays and cancellations on Sunday evening, according to FlightAware. Boston Logan International Airport had the most, and Chicago O’Hare International Airport had the second most.

Greg Chin, communications director for Miami-Dade County Aviation Department, didn’t immediately respond Sunday to a request for comments.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is also experiencing weather-related delays, according to the FAA. Departures were delayed an average of 15 minutes “and increasing” due to thunderstorms. There were around 139 delays and one cancellation at FLL, according to Flight Aware.
