More than 900 rail crossings to be revamped by Florida Dept. of Transportation

The Florida Department of Transportation stated Thursday more than $450 million is going into plans to “completely revolutionize passenger rail crossings throughout the state.”

That includes a $356 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Program, which will be matched with $100 million in the state budget to revamp more than 900 rail crossings.

The design work will include more physical barriers and changes to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.

Some of the anticipated changes include:

• Upgrade of pedestrian-activated warning systems

• Enhancement of pavement markings included at crossings

• The installation of overhead-mounted signals at crossings

• LED-enhanced “DO NOT STOP ON TRACKS” signs at high-speed rail crossings

• “ANOTHER TRAIN COMING” warning signs at locations with at least two tracks

• Installation of physical barriers, such as double gates
