Miami Gardens K-9 missing after running from handler and getting hit by vehicle

Miami Gardens police are searching Tuesday for their K-9 Gael, who ran from a patrol vehicle and was hit by a vehicle, according to a department spokesperson.

On Monday night, K-9 officers responded to a business alarm on the 200 block of Northwest 195th Street, Miami Gardens police said. When one of the officers opened the rear door of her patrol vehicle, Gael ran across Northwest Second Avenue, which is 441 in that part of Miami-Dade County.

The K-9 officer called Gael, but he didn’t respond to commands. Surveillance footage later showed that Gael was hit by a vehicle before running east, police said.

Gael is 2-and-a-half years old, weighs 55-65 pounds and has beige hair and brown eyes, police said. He was wearing a black collar that reads, “Mama says I’m special.” He might be injured after being struck by the vehicle.
