Miami Dolphins place rookie safety on IR, add long snapper

The Miami Dolphins made a series of roster moves to address two injuries players suffered in the season-opening loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Rookie safety Kyle Louis, who injured the MCL in one of his knees, was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday, which means he’ll be sidelined for at least the next four games while recovering from the injury.

It’s unclear at this time if Louis will undergo a surgical procedure to address the knee injury.

Louis, a former Pittsburgh standout Miami selected in the fourth round of the 2026 draft, is the second Dolphins rookie who suffered a serious injury, and was placed on injured reserve. Linebacker Trey Moore, who was expected to be the team’s starting strong side linebacker, began the season on injured reserve because of a left ankle injury he suffered and had surgically repaired after Miami’s second preseason game.

In a corresponding move the Dolphins elevated cornerback Jaylin Simpson up from the practice squad, and he’ll take Louis’ spot on the 53-man roster, and possibly handle the role Louis played on special teams.

Simpson comes to Miami after spending the 2025 season, and this past offseason in Green Bay, before being released when the Packers produced the 53-man roster.

That means Simpson has been coached by head coach Jeff Hafley and defensive coordinator Sean Duggan previously, so he’s familiar with their schemes and plays, and they are familiar with the 6-foot, 180-pounder’s game.

Simpson, a former Auburn standout the Indianapolis Colts selected in the fifth-round of the 2024 draft, played in one career game for the Packers last season, and produced eight tackles (five solo) during the game.

At Auburn he started 23 of 48 games and recorded 116 tackles (89 solo), 4.0 tackles for loss, 21 passes defensed, seven interceptions and one fumble recovery.

The Dolphins also signed long snapper Cal Adomitis to the practice squad, likely to address the shoulder injury Tucker Addington, the long snapper on the 53-man roster, suffered against the Raiders.

Addington continued to handle Miami’s field goal and punt snaps in the game, but was clearly playing through pain. Not placing him on injured reserve immediately indicates that it’s possible he can play relatively soon.

Each team gets two practice squad elevations for game day, and each practice squad player gets three elevations per season.
