Labour says Farage must answer for foreign donations scandal

Britain’s Labour Party said Nigel Farage should take responsibility for fresh allegations about illicit funding that enveloped his Reform UK party as members gathered for its annual conference last week.

The insurgent leader denied that his party received foreign donations in a BBC interview on Sunday. His remarks came after two of his aides were suspended for allegedly discussing how to circumvent rules to secure overseas money in a covertly filmed Channel 4 News report.

“Never happened,” Farage told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg. “People send us money, we send money back all the time if it’s not compliant. And if any money had come through this route, it would have been sent straight back.”

Labour hit back at Farage’s denial, with party chair Bridget Phillipson calling on Farage to be held accountable for the allegations.

“It’s time he stopped the desperate deflection tactics and took responsibility for the many scandals he and Reform are now drowning in,” Phillipson said. The revelations show Farage is “unfit” for office, she said.

Phillipson joins a growing chorus of Labour figures calling out Farage. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the allegations are “a matter for the police and clearly this goes absolutely to the top of Reform,” in a separate BBC interview on Sunday.

Farage’s popularity has waned since new Labour leader Andy Burnham entered Downing Street in July, after previously topping polls asking voters who they expect to be prime minister after the next election.

Both Labour and the opposition Liberal Democrats said they had reported the funding allegations to the police.
