Jon Sumrall’s Teenage Son Sent Him A Brutal Text During Saturday’s Loss

Jon Sumrall’s son didn’t cheer him up after Saturday’s 38-19 loss to South Carolina.

Florida followed a 4-0 start with back-to-back losses. Like many Gators fans, his family has taken the rough patch hard.

During his weekly Gator Talk radio show, Sumrall discussed not seeing his 13-year-old son, Sam, on the field with the rest of his family after the game.

“I asked my wife,” Sumrall recalled, “I said, ‘Where’s Sam?’ And she goes, ‘Oh, he left. He could not stay and watch y’all get your butt kicked.’ And I’m like, ‘What? The dude left?’

To make matters worse, Sam then sent a cold text to his father.

“I’m so pissed off. I don’t want to take a shower. I don’t want to do anything other than maybe punch something,” Sumrall said. “And finally, I grab my phone to just see, did my brother text? Maybe check on Sam since he didn’t stay to the end of the game.

“And Sam texts me and says, ‘Dad, I don’t know if this is forgivable. Like, I don’t know if I can forgive you for this.’ And I’m like, ‘Well son, you’ve done a few things that I don’t know if I can forgive you for either.’”

“We want to win”

Sam’s twin sister, Sadie, also struggled to process the defeat. Sumrall, who said the whole family is “livid” after a loss, consoled her after the Gainesville blowout.

“My 13-year-old daughter, she comes up to me after the game. We go over to the band, and I look over and she is like in crocodile tears. She is balling,” Sumrall said. “And I’m like, ‘Sweetheart, it’s OK. We lost, we’re gonna bounce back.’ And she’s like, ‘Dad, I just hate losing for you.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, well I do too.’”

Sumrall certainly isn’t happy about Florida’s losses either. He’s eager to turn the corner, but the Gators close October with two tough SEC matchups against Texas and Georgia.

“Look, we’re passionate,” Sumrall said. “We want to win. We care about doing it the right way. I want our fan base to have great success. I want our players to have great success. We’re gonna get there. We’re going through a rough patch clearly. I didn’t foresee this coming … We have so much work to do to become a championship-caliber team, and we’re gonna keep fighting.”
