Janet Jackson dropped ‘Control’ 40 years ago. She’s celebrating in South Florida

Janet Jackson needs to be tapped for the “Benjamin Button” sequel.

The pop royal, who turned 60 in May, is thankfully in no way, no how headed to retirement. Jackson actually has a career milestone that will spotlighted right here in South Florida.

The music-industry legend will take the stage Dec. 12 at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise to celebrate the 40th anniversary of her iconic record “Control.” Out of that multi platinum album came such hits as the title song, as well as “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” “Nasty” and “When I Think of You.”

Jackson’s one-night-only performance will be filmed for an upcoming movie called “Janet Jackson: Control 40.”

The flick is directed by Los Angeles filmmaker Leslie Small, who has worked on numerous small- and big-screen specials with the like of Mo’Nique, Kevin Hart and Steve Harvey.

According to her publicity material, the concert experience will also honor Jackson’s entire body of work, so expect to hear more chart-busters like “Miss You Much,” “Escapade” and “All for You.”

“Few artists have changed the course of popular music the way Janet Jackson has,” said Dennis Cunningham, founder/CEO of Airtab Music, the Jupiter-based entertainment company producing the film. ‘Control’ wasn’t simply a hit album — it was a cultural turning point that empowered an entire generation and redefined what a global superstar could be.”

Speaking of the global superstar, Jackson wished “Control” a happy birthday in February on Instagram and tagged the two creative minds who helped it come to be, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who used to work with Prince’s band The Time.

Jam explained the motivation for the record’s “aggressive” rock-meets-rap sound last year on the “Go with Elmo Lovano” podcast at around the 27-minute mark.

“She had all this, what I call feisty attitude. It was all this attitude, but then her records were all very kind of, like sweet,” he said of the then-20-year-old rising star. “And we were like, if we can give her tracks and bring that attitude out, that’s the thing that I think is going to work. …. She embraced it.”

Tickets for the 8 p.m. Dec. 12 show at Amerant Bank Arena, 1 Panther Pkwy. in Sunrise, are on sale now at SeatGeek starting at $213. Capacity is limited, and VIP packages will sell out fast, organizers say.
