Cross-country
Belen Jesuit delivered a historic performance at the New World Fall Spectacular in Jacksonville, winning the 46-team boys’ race as senior Marcelo Mantecon broke his own Florida cross-country 5K record.
Mantecon ran 14:24 at Cecil Field Golf Course, taking nine seconds off the 14:33 mark he set at New World last year. He won by 26 seconds and became the first Florida high school runner to break 14:30 for 5,000 meters in cross-country.
The Wolverines made it a sweep of the top three. Senior Armando Cruz finished second in 14:50, moving to No. 9 on Florida’s all-time list, while junior Jack Michalak took third in 14:55, placing No. 18 all-time. All three Belen runners finished under 15 minutes.
Belen’s depth made the difference in the team race. The Wolverines scored 55 points to beat runner-up Nease, which had 93. Nicholas Veloso finished as Belen’s fourth runner in 15:32, with David Jaramillo completing the scoring group in 15:41. Veloso’s progress is giving the team another strong presence behind its top three as the postseason approaches.
Belen averaged 15:04 for its five scorers, with a 1:17 gap between its first and fifth runners—the fastest team average in Florida high school history. The result reflects a shift in the team’s front pack. Last season, Belen relied on a powerful one-two pairing. This year, Michalak has joined Mantecon and Cruz to give the Wolverines a formidable one-two-three, arguably the strongest in the Southeast and among the best in the country.
The performance matched Belen’s standing on the national stage. Mantecon entered the meet ranked No. 1 in the nation by both MileSplit and DyeStat, while DyeStat’s most recent team ranking had Belen fifth nationally. Mantecon, Cruz, and Michalak were also ranked as Florida’s top three boys.
Volleyball
Riviera Prep junior libero Tory Young recently surpassed 500 digs for the season during the District 15-2A Tournament.
In the tournament, she recorded 19 digs in a three-set victory over Pinecrest Prep and then totaled 16 digs in a 3-set win over Pinecrest Glades. In the district final, she had 28 digs in a loss to True North Classical Academy in three sets.
By placing runner-up at districts, the Bulldogs advanced to regionals.
Young is averaging 7.2 digs per set this season and is ranked sixth in the state in digs.
