Billy Joel just gave an update on his health — there are two things he can’t do

Billy Joel’s heath challenges are ongoing, but no doubt he’ll be raring to go once given the all clear by doctors.

In May 2025 The Piano Man was forced to cancel all shows after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. The condition can cause memory, vision, hearing and balance issues.

Last month the 77-year-old Long Islander revealed on his eponymous Sirius XM channel that he was doing better after an operation to implant a shunt to drain the fluid. But he won’t be jumping around with a mic anytime soon, which is his ultimate goal.

“The doctors told me this: because of my job, which is playing rock and roll music very loud, that it was giving me something like a concussion every time I did a show,” Joel explained on the program. “It was causing damage to my brain nerves and I could be losing more brain cells the more I played, the more shows I did.”

Driving isn’t advisable either, nor is one of his other passions, riding a motorcycle, Joel told the Hollywood Reporter in an article that came out Thursday.

That’s where you, the fans, come in. The six-time Grammy winner is about to auction over 70 motorcycles from his personal collection with auction house Gooding Christie’s. You can bid in person at the Javits Center in New York City Nov. 20–21, or online. Among the illustrious brands in his vast arsenal: Ducati, BMW, Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, Triumph, Honda, Kawasaki and more.

“I’ve always been drawn to bikes built by people who cared about getting every detail right,” the “Uptown Girl” singer-songwriter said in a statement. “I’ve loved building this collection. Now it’s someone else’s turn to hit the road.”

OK, so we won’t spot Joel out on the South Florida roads anytime soon (he has a mega-mansion in Boca Raton), but what about the stage?

Because in January, the legendary recording artist shocked the crowd during an unannounced stop at the Village of Wellington’s 30th anniversary celebration of its incorporation, in western Palm Beach County.

As the audience cheered him on, Joel joined the headliners, a Boynton Beach Billy Joel cover band called The Turnstiles.

Sitting down at the ivories, the father of three launched into his 1979 classic “Big Shot,” as well as 1989’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” rattling off the fast-paced lyrics without missing a beat.

“They have to test me further to see if I can go back and do performing again, which I would like to be able to do,” Joel told HR.
