Another Jacksonville taproom dries up as San Marco gastropub closes

The spell is broken. A two-story Jacksonville gastropub that promised bewitching brews abruptly closed after two years.

Voodoo Brewing Co. shut its doors quietly at 1974 San Marco Blvd. in the renovated, 101-year-old San Marco Building overlooking Balis Park in the center of the historic San Marco retail and restaurant district.

The brewpub was the Meadville, Pennsylvania-based craft brewery’s only Northeast Florida location.

Highly anticipated when it opened in July 2024, Voodoo Brewing boasted at least 24 craft beers on tap, plus elevated pub fare and craft cocktails.

Neither company officials nor the franchise co-owner could be reached for comment.

The Jacksonville gastropub had closed mid-week, employees at neighboring businesses told the Times-Union on Saturday, Sept. 19.

The brewpub was no longer on the company website. St. Petersburg and Valrico are the only Florida locations listed on the website.

Google listed the Jacksonville location as “permanently closed.” The gastropub’s telephone went unanswered. The front doors were locked, but through the windows an illuminated neon sign could be seen on the back wall near the taps in the downstairs bar.

The Jacksonville gastropub is among at least 12 Voodoo Brewing taprooms and franchise locations to close nationwide since May 2023, according to news media reports and social media accounts.

Voodoo Brewing is the latest in a long list of Jacksonville-area craft breweries, gastropubs and brewpubs turning off the taps during the past few years.

Factors cited most often for the closures include changing consumer tastes and habits, rising operating costs and the fluctuating economy.

• Bold City Downtown: The taproom closed June 27 at 109 E. Bay St. in downtown Jacksonville as its lease expired after nine years. Remaining open and in production is its parent company, Bold City Brewery, roughly three miles away at 2670 Rosselle St., #7 in Riverside.
• Intitution Ale Works: Closed April 24 at 929 E. Bay St. after a 15-year run there.
• King Maker Brewing: Closed April 4, at 720 King St. in Riverside, after six years.
• Amelia Island Brewing Co: Closed The Tavern by AIBC, its home base and restaurant, as well as adjacent taproom, The Alley by AIBC, on Nov. 5, 2025, in historic downtown Fernandina Beach after nearly a decade.
• Seven Bridges Grille & Brewery: Closed June 23, 2025, at 9735 Gate Parkway N. in Jacksonville’s Tinseltown, after 26 years.
• Jekyll Brewing: Closed on May 10, 2025, at 131 1st Ave. N. in Jax Beach Town Center in Jacksonville Beach, after almost two years.
• Barley & Pie Brewing Co.: Closed April 5, 2025, just nine months after opening on Fleming Island.
• Ragtime Tavern: Closed Jan. 27, 2025, at 207 Atlantic Blvd. in Atlantic Beach, after 42 years.
• Historically Hoppy Brewing Company: Closed in December 2024 at 1636 North Main St. in historic Springfield, after 2 1/2 years.
• A1A Ale Works: Closed in May 2024 at 1 King St. in St. Augustine, after 29 years.
• Hyperion Brewing Co.: Closed in March 2024 at 1744 N Main St. in Springfield, after more than six years.
• Brewer’s Pizza: Home of Pinglehead Brewing Company, in November 2023 at 4B Blanding Blvd. in Orange Park. closed after 14 years.
• Lemonstreet Brewing Co.: Closed in December 2023 at 2100 Dennis St. in Jacksonville’s Rail Yard District, after four years.
• Tabula Rasa Brewery: Closed in August 2023 at 2385 Corbett St., also in the Rail Yard District, after five years.

Bottlenose Brewing Co., dating back to 2017, remains in production amid relocation plans. It temporarily closed its gastropub on May 31 at 9700 Deer Lake Court, Suite 1, on the Southside.

The craft brewery posted on Facebook on June 5 that it was entertaining inquiries from potential investors.

“As we evaluate potential opportunities for the future of the brand, we welcome conversations with individuals or groups who share our passion for craft beer, community, and the Bottlenose vision,” Bottlenose posted.
