Adult charges for teen after shot fired during fight at Redland’s Berry Farms

A 17-year-old boy is facing an attempted murder charge as an adult after being accused of opening fire during a large fight at the Berry Farms attraction in the rural southwest Miami-Dade Redland agricultural district last month.

Jencarlos Gamez was booked into the Metrowest Detention Center Tuesday on the attempted murder charge, as well as aggravated assault with a firearm and illegally discharging a firearm in public, according to jail records.

He was also booked into juvenile lockup in July in connection with two separate incidents where he and his friends are accused of luring victims into bathrooms and robbing them at gunpoint, court records show.

The incident at the Berry Farms, located at 13720 Southwest 216th Street, happened on July 19 around 11:30 p.m., according to his Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office arrest report. A group of teens was attacked by another group of between 15 and 20 teens, including Gamez, the report states.

During the fight, Gamez was knocked down while holding a gun, witnesses told the sheriff’s office.

Detectives watching cell phone footage of the melee state that they saw Gamez get up from the ground holding an object before a gunshot was heard, according to the report. Witnesses told detectives they saw Gamez fire a weapon into the crowd, and detectives found a spent 9mm shell casing at the scene, the report states.

No one was shot, according to the sheriff’s office.

On Dec. 13 last year, the sheriff’s office said Gamez and his friends beat and pistol whipped another teen inside the bathroom of a McDonald’s at 12185 Southwest 26th Street. They also stole the victim’s bracelet and an earring, according to his arrest report.

On July 8, detectives say Gamez convinced another teenager to go with him inside a bathroom at Eureka Park at 18320 Southwest 119th Avenue near Miami Heights. He then fought with the victim trying to steal his bookbag. During the fight, two of Gamez’s friends emerged from bathroom stalls holding guns and made the victim hand over the bag, according to the arrest report for that incident.

Deputies arrested him at his Miami Heights home on July 21, court records show.

A judge had not set his bond as of Wednesday afternoon. The attorney listed on his docket did not immediately respond to the Miami Herald’s request for comment. He has a pretrial detention hearing scheduled for Thursday morning.
