Miami Carnival returns to honor ‘full spectrum of Caribbean culture’

The sounds of steel drums and the vibrant feathers and beaded outfits will return next month for Miami Broward Carnival in South Florida.

The colorful soiree, which is entering its 42nd year, marks the end of carnival season and stretches over two weekends. The festival typically attracts 100,000 visitors who enjoy the South Florida weather and celebrate Caribbean culture.

Last year, immigration raids and tariffs hung over the celebration causing the event and mas bands to make adjustments. But Joan Hinkson-Justin, chairwoman of the host committee, said this year is “an opportunity for Miami Broward Carnival to evolve while remaining firmly rooted in our traditions.”

“With deepened community partnerships and new experiences across Broward County, we are excited to welcome residents and visitors to celebrate the full spectrum of Caribbean culture,” she said.

The two-week celebration kicks off on Saturday Oct. 3 with Junior Carnival and Pan Jamboree at the Tamarac Sports Complex, featuring eight youth masquerade bands and four steelbands. Carnival continues Friday, Oct. 9 with a new carnival experience called Red Road Fete in Tamarac at Village Amphitheater. On Oct. 10, J’ouvert will take place at Central Broward park and Broward County stadium and will feature 20 paint and power bands.

The weekslong celebration will culminate on Sunday, Oct. 11 with the Miami Broward Carnival Day Parade & Fete at Central Broward Park, showcasing 16 masquerade bands and a live concert with Caribbean artists along with vendors and a food village.
