Ford Has a Clever New Idea for Sleeping Inside a Bronco

Published by the USPTO as US 20260233661 A1, the patent doesn’t name the Bronco directly, but the pictured SUV leaves little doubt about what Ford has in mind. It’s a genuinely different concept from the truck-bed tonneau tent Ford patented back in 2024 — this one lives entirely inside the cabin, built around a three-panel system engineered to work with the vehicle’s existing 60/40 split-folding rear seats.

How The System Actually Deploys

As seen in the USPTO filings, in its stowed state, the platform sits flat against the cargo floor and seatbacks, invisible during normal driving. Folding the rear seats down aligns the middle panel with the cargo floor, and from there Ford describes two different ways to extend a third panel forward over the front seats: one uses dual arms built into the front seatback that swing out and lock into slots on the front panel, while the other attaches the front panel to the rear headrest mounting points via a hinge, with deployable legs dropping down to the floor or locking into recessed mounts built into the B- and C-pillars, making an otherwise conventional interior setup rather flexible. Ford rounds out the concept with a dedicated mattress topper, gear shelving, and an insect-proof mesh net for ventilation.

Ford Keeps Filing Bronco Patents Lately

This is just the latest in a run of Bronco-specific patents Ford has published recently. A door power-transfer system that eliminates the need to unplug wiring when removing Bronco doors surfaced just yesterday, following a roof-panel storage patent that lets removed panels stack together and ride along on the vehicle itself, published back in June. None of these guarantee production, but the pace of filings suggests Ford’s engineers are actively iterating on the Bronco’s outdoor-lifestyle positioning rather than treating it as settled.

Ford Has Already Built Something Like This — Just Not Here

Ford doesn’t need to guess whether buyers want a camping-focused Bronco: it already sells one in China, the electrified Bronco Basecamp, complete with a pop-up roof, a one-touch camping mode that folds the front seats flat, and a built-in rear kitchen. Whether this new sleeping-platform patent represents a similar idea heading for US Broncos, or just Ford’s engineers protecting an idea that never leaves the drawing board, is impossible to say from a patent filing alone.
