See which Miami-Dade public schools are in U.S. News & World Report’s ‘Top 100’

Miami-Dade has more schools in U.S. News & World Report’s latest ranking of top 100 public schools than any county in the United States save one.

Six different high schools — five run by Miami-Dade County Public Schools and one charter school — made the outlet’s latest top 100 rankings. That puts Miami-Dade County second only to Maricopa County, Arizona, where Phoenix is located, which had eight schools in the top 100.

With 13 schools total on the list, the state of Florida is tied with Arizona for most schools in the top 100. Most of the schools have sought-after magnet programs or are designated for gifted students.

The schools are located across the state, including two in Brevard County and one each in Palm Beach, Broward, Sarasota, Osceola and Duval counties.

The rankings are imprecise, and don’t take into account everything that students and parents prioritize when choosing where to go to school, but they do offer a snapshot of how schools perform on several metrics. Some of those metrics are a few years old.

Per U.S. News & World Report, 30% of the rankings are based off “college readiness,” a metric defined by student participation and outcomes on Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate tests. The next 20% is based off state assessment scores, then another 20% is calculated by how well a school’s students do on those assessments compared to peer schools with a similar demographic makeup.

The following three categories are evaluated and granted 10% weight to the rankings: Underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rates.

Here are the six schools in Miami-Dade County in the top 100, as well as their placement number on the list:

47: West Shore Junior/Senior High (Brevard)
63: Stanton College Preparatory (Duval)
81: Suncoast Community High School (Palm Beach)
93: Millenium 6-12 Collegiate Academy (Broward)
94: Edgewood Junior/Senior High (Brevard)

Miami-Dade County also had several schools show up in the outlet’s ranking of top 100 public schools in Florida. Of the top 100, 32 schools are in Miami-Dade County.

Most of them are specialized magnet schools in the public school system or charter schools. Though high-performing schools run by Miami-Dade County Public Schools litter the top rankings, charter schools make up most of Miami-Dade’s top performers in the bottom half of the state’s top 100. A little more than half— 17 of 32 — of Miami-Dade’s public schools in the state’s top 100 are charter schools.
