Broward food company recalls powder after a customer’s medical issue

A Parkland company recalled 3,860 packs of its egg substitute because it might have the very thing it wasn’t supposed to have — egg.

That’s not a problem for most people. It’s a potentially major problem if you have an egg allergy, and the egg isn’t listed on the pack among the allergens. That’s why 529 Commerce issued a recall of Rooted In Rare brand Aquafaba Powder.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to egg run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products,” said 529 Commerce’s recall notice, posted to the FDA’s website. “The recall was initiated after a consumer reported an allergic reaction after consuming the product. No other reports of illness have been received to date.

Also, 529 declared, “We regret any inconvenience this has caused and have terminated our relationship with this particular supplier.”

This involves 4-ounce and 12-ounce packages, which were sold through Amazon and the Rooted in Rare website between June 2025 and this month. Recalled packs have either a best by date of Dec. 14, 2026, or Dec. 12, 2027.

“Aquafaba is the liquid from cooked chickpeas, known for their incredible ability to replace eggs in baking and cooking,” the back of the package explains. “Our Aquafaba powder mkaes it easier than ever to enjoy this vegan-friendly, plant-based alternative.”

If there’s any possibility this powder will be served to or eaten by someone with an egg allergy, throw it out or return it for a refund. The recall notice directs Amazon buyers to get a refund from Amazon.com while those who bought through the Rooted in Rare website should contact the company.
