Travel alert: Caracas flights from Miami canceled after earthquakes in Venezuela

Flights from Miami to Venezuela have been canceled after twin earthquakes rocked the country, collapsing buildings, and killing or trapping hundreds of people.

Two American Airlines’s flight to Caracas on Thursday were canceled, said Miami International Airport spokesperson Greg Chin.

A GlobalX arrival from Caracas scheduled for 3:25 p.m. has not yet been canceled, Chin said.

The flight disruptions come as Venezuelan Interim President Delcy Rodríguez announced the shutdown of Maiquetía International Airport, also known as Simón Bolívar International Airport, due to severe structural damage.

Commercial flights between Miami and Caracas resumed on April 30, 2026, ending a seven-year suspension of direct air travel between the U.S. and Venezuela. Flights from Miami to Maracaibo are scheduled to start in mid-July.

The Venezuelan Caribbean was rocked Wednesday night by two powerful earthquakes measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 that struck just 39 seconds apart, according to the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center.
