Can you get hired at this job fair? Check these 6 ways to increase your chances

On Thursday, more than 50 employers will hang a “Help Wanted” sign at a job fair at the Broward arena where the Florida Panthers play.

The Mega Job News South Florida Job Fair at Amerant Arena in Sunrise will feature companies and public agencies hiring for more than 2,000 jobs in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Unlike a Panthers game, admission and parking are free at the fair, which runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 25.

Marketing director Tiffany Price works with the job fair and has advice for job seekers on how to get the most from the sprawling event.

Here are six tips:

1. Talk to as many people as possible

Price once advised a woman looking for a job to talk to every recruiter at the fair. One table had orange cones and neon vests to attract construction workers, but the company needed a human resources director. The woman wasn’t interested in construction, but still talked to the recruiter at the table.

And she landed the HR director job.

“I encourage job seekers to stop and talk to each table,” Price said. “Recruiters are at individual booths and represent so many different types of companies with different positions. You never know.”

2. Take advantage of being in front of recruiters

Price recommends that job seekers make the most of meeting recruiters in person as opposed to applying on websites or cold-calling businesses.

“Be willing to spend the time if you are there because you get to see people face-to-face,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity.”

3. Be confident

Employers have told Price the importance of being confident enough to walk up to tables. If the job seekers can’t be bold enough to walk up to a table, how well will do well if hired?

“I call it speed dating with jobs,” she said. “Employers are meeting 1,000 employees in a four-hour window. The job seeker has a small window to make a good first impression and treat the job fair like an interview.”

4. Dress for success

Dressing professionally is part of what Price says job seekers can do to make a good impression on recruiters. She also recommends that job seekers wear flat shoes instead of heels for comfort when they’re walking around the arena.

“Dress for success,” she said. “Don’t come with your AirPods in your ears. It’s a mini-interview. Don’t be on the way to the beach, hear about this on the radio and come to the job fair.”

5. Act as if you are being interviewed

Price said that job seekers should focus on being a job candidate.

“If you wouldn’t do it an interview, don’t do it at a job fair,” she said. “Treat it as if you were going on an interview.”
