9/11 TV specials & documentaries to mark the 25th anniversary: How to watch

The broadcast networks and cable news channels will have special coverage today of the 25th anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11. Most of the networks will have reporters and anchors at Ground Zero in New York for special events and observances. In many cases, that programming will continue into the primetime schedule.

Here’s a brief rundown, but note that this list doesn’t include the myriad of options on streaming sites.

ABC’s special coverage

Special reports on 9/11 observances will air across “Good Morning America” (7 a.m.) and “World News Tonight with David Muir” (6:30 p.m.).

“9/11 Tribute in Light: Live from Lower Manhattan” (8 p.m.) — A look back on 9/11 honors the victims killed, reflects on the lasting impact of the day and commemorates the resilience of the survivors, families, first responders and communities forever. David Muir, Robin Roberts and Diane Sawyer

“9/11: United We Stand – 25 Years Later” (9 p.m.) — This new documentary, led by Michael Strahan, talks to iconic athletes, entertainers, journalists, first responders and cultural figures who were instrumental in our collective healing about their experiences with 9/11, and how sports, music, comedy and the arts helped Americans rediscover hope, unity and a sense of normalcy. It features interviews with Derek Jeter, Pete Davidson, Jon Bon Jovi, Jon Stewart, Jimmy Fallon, Billy Crystal and others. This documentary has been streaming on Hulu and Disney+ but will simulcast tonight on ABC.

CBS’ special coverage

Special reports on 9/11 observances will air across “CBS Mornings” (7 a.m.) and “CBS Evening News” (6:30 p.m.).

“9/11: We Remember” (8 p.m.) – Tony Dokoupil reports from Ground Zero in New York City to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The hour features three stories of survival, loss, and hope.

“Daughters of 9/11” (9 p.m.) – Twenty-five years after the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil, Elizabeth Miller, Jessica Trant and FBI special agent Frank Pellegrino confront whether the man accused of masterminding the attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, will ever face justice.

CNN special coverage

“9/11: 25 Years Later” (7 a.m.) – Throughout the day, the network’s anchors, correspondents and reporters report from sites impacted by the terrorist attacks 25 years ago to remember the thousands of victims and reflect on how that day forever changed the country.

Kate Bolduan will anchor from Memorial Plaza at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in Lower Manhattan, with Brynn Gingras providing real-time reporting from the commemoration ceremony, as CNN carries the day’s events, honors the victims and examines the attacks’ continuing impact 25 years later. John Berman and Sara Sidner will also join from New York and Brian Todd will be in Washington, DC as the country marks a national day of remembrance and service. Danny Freeman will be in Shanksville, Pennsylvania as people gather to honor the ultimate sacrifice of the brave passengers and crew on Flight 93 with a commemoration ceremony.

Fox News special coverage

“Fox & Friends” (7 a.m.) – Co-hosts Kilmeade, Ainsley Earhardt and Lawrence Jones will broadcast live from the Hyatt House in Jersey City, overlooking the New York City (NYC) skyline, while Steve Doocy will contribute live from Ground Zero.

“America’s Newsroom” (9 a.m.) – Co-anchors Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino will broadcast live from Brookfield Place overlooking the World Trade Center campus in downtown Manhattan. The program will carry the live reading of the victims’ names from the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

“The Faulkner Focus” (11 a.m.), “Outnumbered” (noon), and “America Reports” (1 p.m.) will all feature special segments and interviews with a wide range of guests including families of 9/11 victims, military officials, 9/11 survivors, and founders/CEOs of 9/11-related foundations.

NBC special coverage

“Today” (7 a.m., NBC) – The special edition of “Today” is led by Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin, with Guthrie reporting from Ground Zero. At 8:30 a.m., Guthrie will anchor as the nation observes moments of silence commemorating the victims of the attacks.

“NBC Nightly News” (6:30 p.m.) – Tom Llamas will anchor special editions of the nightly evening newscast and “Top Story” from Ground Zero. Joining coverage will be NBC News’ Tom Costello, Stephanie Gosk, Gabe Gutierrez, Emilie Ikeda, Courtney Kube, Andrea Mitchell, Kelly O’Donnell, Anne Thompson and others.

“Facing Ground Zero” (10 p.m., NBC) — This special presentation of “Dateline” draws from the NBC News archives and includes never-before-seen footage. The documentary will revisit New Yorkers whose experiences were captured by NBC News cameras on Sept. 11, 2001, reuniting with them 25 years later as “they reflect on what they saw, what they survived and how the attacks indelibly shaped their lives and the country.”

PBS special

“Verdi’s Requiem: The Met Remembers 9/11” (9 p.m.) — This “Great Performances” special originally premiered on September 11, 2021, in remembrance of the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Hosted by Misty Copeland and led by Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin featuring soloists Ailyn Pérez, Michelle DeYoung, Matthew Polenzani and Eric Owens.

A new History Channel documentary

“102 Minutes Inside The Twin Towers” (8 p.m.) — This new documentary features first-hand accounts of people who were inside the World Trade Center buildings during the attack — and who escaped. Included are bankers, window washers, building security and first responders recounting what they and others inside the Twin Towers heard and experienced during the 102 minutes between the first plane impact and the collapses of both towers. Produced by Robin Roberts and sponsored by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, whose mission is to honor the sacrifice of first responders and military service members.
