Wildfire smoke could make it a hazy day in Miami-Dade. There’s an air quality alert

A new wildfire sparked in western Miami-Dade is extending its smoky tendrils to the coast, putting the entire county under an air quality alert until 3 p.m. Thursday.

The National Weather Service’s Miami office warned that air quality could reach unhealthy levels, so people who are sensitive to bad air should limit their time outside.

As of 9:30 a.m., the air quality index in Miami was about 60. Generally, anything under 50 is considered healthy, and anything over 100 is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.

As of the most recent update on Wednesday evening, the Florida Forest Service said that the 200-acre 41-31 mile marker fire was still 0% contained.

Two other fires just west of Kendall are nearly extinguished, including a 700-acre fire that was 95% contained and a 25-acre fire that was 80% contained, as of the last updates from the Forest Service.
