Why Trinidad Chambliss Can Be the No. 1 Overall Pick in the 2027 NFL Draft

While most of the conversation surrounding the No. 1 overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft has centered on other quarterbacks like Arch Manning and Dante Moore, or a generational wide receiver prospect in Jeremiah Smith, Trinidad Chambliss is making a strong case for his own consideration.

The Ole Miss quarterback added another impressive bullet point on that resume Saturday night against LSU, delivering huge plays in clutch moments to help the Rebels secure a 32-24 victory in front of their home crowd.

Chambliss finished the game 33-of-48 passing for 363 yards and a pair of touchdowns through the air (one interception), adding a rushing touchdown in the final minutes that gave Ole Miss the lead for good.

Originally slated for last year’s NFL Draft class, Chambliss used the legal system to get another year of eligibility and return for one more season at Ole Miss. Prior to that development, Chambliss carried a second-round grade on my board following an impressive 2025 campaign with the Rebels that included a College Football Playoff appearance.

So far this season, Chambliss has continued to build on that success, showing continued development as a passer, along with the ability to make defenses pay for not respecting his ability to make big plays as a runner when necessary. Saturday night’s performance against the Bayou Bengals was full of moments where Chambliss looked like a franchise quarterback in every way, showing all the physical traits and intangible qualities that typically land prospects at the top of the board:

From making challenging throws across the field, to using his mobility to extend plays and still make quality reads and downfield throws, to delivering perfect passes with anticipation, accuracy, and the right balance of velocity and touch, Chambliss’ performance against a high-quality opponent was teach tape in terms of how to play the position at the highest level.

Chambliss technically finished the game with just two rushing yards, but when his team needed it most, he called his own number on a 14-yard touchdown run with the game on the line, outrunning an LSU defensive back on the edge and turning the corner for the game-winning score:

The only negative when it comes to evaluating Chambliss as an NFL prospect is his size. Listed at 6-0, 210 pounds, it wouldn’t be surprising if those measurements were slightly exaggerated. That’s not the ideal frame NFL teams are looking for in a franchise passer, but he wouldn’t be the first quarterback to defy those conventions and still be the first name called on draft day.

Even if you exclude Michael Vick, who went No. 1 overall due as much to his elite speed and explosiveness as his arm talent, recent draft history has seen both Baker Mayfield and Bryce Young come off the board at No. 1 overall despite being undersized passers who didn’t bring elite running ability as a calling card of their respective skill sets. In 2023, Young went No. 1 overall instead of a more traditional pocket passer in C.J. Stroud, who had more typical measurements for the position. Back in 2018, it was Mayfield who took the top spot in a class that features the likes of Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen and Sam Darnold.

Much like Chambliss, both Mayfield and Young were known for being effective passers with the instincts and athleticism to create big plays both inside and outside of the pocket, while delivering big in clutch moments due to elite competitiveness and playmaking ability.

Some may also point out that Chambliss will turn 25 years old before Week 1 of the 2027 NFL season, but NFL teams have proven in recent years they’re not as eager to dismiss quarterback prospects as unworthy of a top pick just because they’re a little older. If anything, many teams could look favorably on the experience and maturity Chambliss would bring to the table as an older prospect, as well as his proven track record of success at both Ferris State (two-time Division II national champion) and Ole Miss.

It still feels more likely that someone like Manning, Moore, or even Miami’s Darian Mensah will end up taking that top spot come next April, or that a team that already has a young quarterback spends that pick on Smith. But Chambliss continues to prove that aside from prototypical size, he brings everything to the table NFL teams typically prioritize at the game’s most important position, and that should put him in the conversation.
