“The most fabulous event Atlantic City has ever seen” – When Donald Trump agreed to host a Shaquille O’Neal vs. Hakeem Olajuwon $1 million event

Shaquille O’Neal did not just take the Orlando Magic’s loss to the Houston Rockets in the 1995 NBA Finals hard; he took it personally. Months after that humbling defeat, O’Neal wanted to exact revenge on 1994 MVP and DPOY winner Hakeem Olajuwon, not on the NBA courts, but in a one-on-one showdown.

And so Shaq’s agent Leonard Armato hatched a brilliant plan. Because he also represented Olajuwon, he had Dream agree to take on Shaq in a 1-v-1 game for cash. Armato negotiated with Taco Bell, which agreed to give a $1 million prize. But the event needed a promoter who was as big as the competitors in the contest.

He found the guy — casino mogul Donald J. Trump, who offered his crown jewel, the $1.2 billion Trump Taj Mahal, to host the massive event.

“Shaq versus Hakeem in the Taco Bell One-on-One Championship will be the most fabulous event Atlantic City has ever seen, and only the Trump Taj Mahal could host such a mega-event,” Trump said. “Once again, the entire world will be focused on Atlantic City for what is sure to be an event that will go down in history.”

“War on the Floor”

And so “War on the Floor” was conceived. It was going to be a $19.95 pay-per-view event held at Trump’s luxury casino resort, which was dubbed, back then, the 8th wonder of the world.

It was slated to have three 1-v-1 games, including a “lightweight” showdown between NBA guards Kenny Anderson and Nick Van Exel and a “middleweight” matchup between Kevin Garnett and Joe Smith. Of course, the main event was Shaq vs. Dream in a highly anticipated Finals rematch.

As expected, Trump and Taco Bell heavily promoted the event, and as the September 30, 1995, date approached, it gained steam. It was trending toward becoming the massive event that Armato and Trump had hatched. However, at literally the last minute, Olajuwon pulled out of the event with an injury.

It turned out that Hakeem was nursing a back injury the week of the event. However, he did not want to ruin everything; Olajuwon tried to play through it. But the closer the date came, his back worsened. Armato had him checked by a physician, and it was determined that it wasn’t worth the risk, given his NBA contract. And so Dream backed out.

Shaquille defended Hakeem and said he did not back out

Since Olajuwon withdrew from the event the night before it was supposed to take place, some suggested that Hakeem ducked Shaquille. However, because the same agent represented both big men, O’Neal knew the real score, and he went on to clear the air by defending his rival and taking a shot at Christian Laettner.

“When Leonard called me and told me Hakeem can’t do it, I was like, ‘Cool.’ Hakeem’s not the guy who I’d say, ‘Aw, he’s scared’,” O’Neal told NBC Sports. “One, I know he’s not scared. Two, I know if he could do it, he would do it. But if it was Christian Laettner, I would have said he’s scared.”

More than looking for revenge against Olajuwon for beating him in the 1995 NBA Finals, O’Neal had a bigger axe to grind against Laettner, whom he always believed took his spot on the original Dream Team. But that’s another story.

Later that night, Trump lent his private jet to O’Neal so he could return to Orlando after the failed event. Meanwhile, the future U.S. president stirred up controversy by blaming the league for Olajuwon’s withdrawal.

“There’s a rumor out there that the NBA had something to do with it,” Trump claimed. “But it’s just a rumor.”

That was a wild accusation from the then-casino mogul. But as everyone later found out, making false or misleading claims was second nature to DJT; during his first term as president, he was found to have made 30,573 such statements.
