Pedestrian is killed after hit-and-run crash in Margate, police say

A man was killed early Thursday morning after being run down by a truck as he tried to cross a road in Margate, according to police.

At around 2:50 a.m., police say Gregory Bowman, 59, was walking on the sidewalk in the 5400 block of West Atlantic Boulevard on the south side of the road. Bowman stepped off the curb and began crossing West Atlantic Boulevard in a northbound direction, police say.

As he walked across, he was struck by a blue 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, which was going eastbound in the right through lane. The driver of the Dodge fled, police say.

Bowman died on the roadway, Margate Fire Rescue said.

Margate Police Traffic Homicide investigators identified the driver as John Calvino Jr., 55, of Coral Springs. Calvino was found in Hollywood and taken into custody.

He has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
