Packers Roster Tracker: Every Move Made Ahead of Week 1

The Green Bay Packers roster is set with less than 24 hours to go before Sunday’s season opener. Over the week, they made a few roster adjustments and locked up a core piece ahead of their Week 1 contest on the road against the Minnesota Vikings.

Here’s a breakdown of all the roster moves made by the Packers this week.

09/12 – Packers elevated WR Bo Melton and LB Kristian Welch from the practice squad, adding them to the active roster for Week 1 vs. the Vikings.

09/12 – Signed TE Tucker Kraft to a four-year, $75 million extension through 2030.

09/11 – Released WR Bo Melton, signing him to the practice squad.

09/09 – Signed RB Damon Bankston and S Kahlef Hailassie to the practice squad; released S Murvin Kenion III.

Packers Lock Up TE Tucker Kraft, Further Solidifying Young Core

Tucker Kraft was on the cusp of entering the final year of his rookie deal without a new contract. However, he and the Packers were able to work something out just before the season, inking the 25-year-old to a four-year, $75 million extension, which will keep him in Green Bay through 2030.

The deal shows the Packers have faith that Kraft won’t just return to form after a season-ending ACL injury sustained last season, but will only improve over the next four seasons. Meanwhile, it shows commitment to the young core the franchise has assembled.

Ahead of this season, Green Bay has secured a good portion of its offense long-term, extending Kraft and the exciting wide receiver duo of Christian Watson (four years, $110.5 million) and Jayden Reed (three years, $50.25 million), along with defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt (three years, $57 million).

Bo Melton Saga Is Resolved, For Now

On Friday, the Packers made a curious move, releasing wideout and special teams standout Bo Melton. At the time, theories began to arise that Green Bay was preparing to make an addition to the roster, but no such move occurred.

Instead, the Packers were simply doing some financial maneuvering.

Melton, a vested veteran, would have had his full base salary ($1.14 million) guaranteed if he were on the Packers’ active roster heading into Week 1. Instead, by elevating him from the practice squad, Green Bay has created a little flexibility.
