With the win, Notable Speech earned a spot into the starting gate for the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) at Keeneland on Oct. 31, where he will look to win the race in back-to-back years.
Trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick, the 5-year-old son of Dubawi covered the mile on the turf in 1:33.86 and paid $3.40 for the win as the 3-5 favorite.
Deterministic was quick from the gate and settled into leisurely fractions of :24.36, :47.89, and 1:10.73 for six furlongs. Gas Me Up and Silius (IRE) raced as a pair just behind the leader, while 39-1 longshot Pierre was fourth on the outside. Notable Speech was fifth, with Itsastormymonday completing the bunched-up field in sixth.
At the top of the stretch, Deterministic held the lead by a couple of lengths, but Notable Speech was making his move on the outside, while the rest of the field struggled to keep up. Inside final sixteenth, Notable Speech showed his class and powered to the front to secure the victory. Deterministic was well clear of Gas Me Up for second. Itsastormymonday, Pierre, and Silius rounded out the order of finish in fourth through sixth, respectively.

Notable Speech was bred in Great Britain and is out of the Invincible Spirit mare Swift Rose. Through 19 career starts, he has 10 wins, one second and one third place-finish and earnings of $4,428,249. If Notable Speech heads to Keeneland for the Breeders’ Cup, he will attempt to become the second horse to win the Woodbine Mile and Breeders’ Cup Mile in consecutive years. Wise Dan accomplished the feat in 2012 and 2013.
The victory also marked the fourth time in five years that Godolphin, Buick, and Appleby have teamed up to win the Woodbine Mile. They also won with Modern Games (IRE) in 2022 and Master of the Seas (IRE) in 2023. Each time the trio has won the Woodbine Mile, they have gone on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile that same year.
Earlier on Saturday’s card, Buick teamed with Godolphin homebred and Appleby-trained Al Hudaiba (GB) to win the Summer Stakes (GI), also a Breeders’ Cup ‘Win and You’re In” event.
