NFL Warns All 32 Teams About Potential Punishment Before Week 2

The New England Patriots went viral this offseason, when an NFL analyst discovered their tricky video board usage when an opposing team was attempting a field goal inside of Gillette Stadium.

The Patriots would have a different angle of the field goal attempt on the video board, to potentially distract the opposing kicker and make it difficult for him to make out the actual uprights on the field.

“On opponent FGs, the video board showed a reverse camera angle that created an offset second set of yellow uprights behind the real goalposts, potentially making kicks more disorienting. After reviewing dozens of examples and 52 Patriots FG attempts, the illusion reportedly appeared on New England’s own kicks ZERO times,” Polymarket shared.

It was an interesting technique, that’s for sure.

But it’s since been banned.

The NFL has sent a memo to all 32 teams, making it clear that this kind of behavior is not allowed moving forward.

NFL warns all 32 teams about possible punishment

A static image is now required.

NFL teams who violate or ignore the ruling will be punished appropriately.

“The NFL has long required all videoboards and ribbon boards to display a static image — no flashing images, blinking effects, moving text/images etc. — or an All-22 view, such as the high-sideline or high-end-zone angle, during kicks,” ESPN reported.

“What has now changed, according to a memo obtained by ESPN that was sent to all clubs Sept. 7, is that teams must use the same All-22 angle or static image for both kicking teams. The modification is designed to ensure competitive equity. Teams were warned that violations will result in discipline.”

The Patriots are scheduled to host the Steelers at Gillette Stadium on Sunday afternoon. It’ll be interesting to see how New England handles opposing kicks from now on.
