New York Jets Count on Jason Sanders, But May Miss Will McDonald IV Against Packers

Former Miami Dolphin Jason Sanders will handle the kicking duties for the New York Jets for the second weekend, the team has announced. But it’s not a sure thing he’ll last the entire season in the position.

Sanders hit on three of four field goals in the opening game of the season against the Tennessee Titans, with two more than 50 yards. But he had one that was as bad a kick as you’ll see outside of a high school game, raising red flags for a team that needs every point it can muster.

Kicker Blake Grupe remains on the practice squad, and the Jets brought in other candidates for a tryout. That indicates they’re keeping a close eye out on what’s available should Sanders falter.

In injury news, edge rusher Will McDonald IV is now listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. McDonald sustained an ankle sprain, although details of how it happened have not been revealed.

McDonald had a sack and a near safety on Tennessee quarterback Cam Ward in the Tennessee game, and is one of the leading rushers for the Jets over the last two seasons. He had eight sacks last year.

His loss would be a tough one for the Jets, who are counting on a strong pass rush to counter the pass-happy Green Bay Packers and quarterback Jordan Love. Edge Joseph Ossai is also out for this game, leaving the burden to make things happen on rookie David Bailey and Kingsley Enagbare as the main sack threats.

The Jets will also be without veteran safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and running back/returner Kene Nwangwu against Green Bay. The only good news for the Jets is that cornerback D’Angelo Ponds, a second-round draft choice, will make his Jets debut on Sunday. He will likely see limited action as a slot receiver shadow.

The Packers are also banged up on defense. Defensive tackle Warren Brinson is out, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave is doubtful, and edge rusher Lukas Van Ness is questionable in concussion protocol. On the other side of the ball, lineman Aaron Banks and Zach Bako-Bewele are questionable.

The Jets will likely use a ground and pound attack against the Pack, hoping to control time of possession with running backs Breece Hall and Braelon Allen. That would limit the opportunities for dangerous Pack quarterback Love and his talented receivers.

Rain is expected during the game, another Jets advantage that may slow the Packers passing game.
