Michael Jordan revealed which historic game-worn sneakers he kept and why he wore a new pair every night
During his playing years, Michael Jordan famously wore a fresh pair of shoes for practically every game. It was not just about having another pair available. MJ was convinced that putting on a brand-new pair of shoes gave him an edge over any player or a team, for that matter, every time he stepped on the basketball court. That mindset made the sneakers he kept even more meaningful.

In his book, “I’m Back: More Rare Air,” Michael explained that most of his game-worn shoes were given away. However, there were exceptions. According to MJ, the sneakers from games that were significant to him didn’t go to anybody. They became souvenirs of what he had accomplished.
“As far as the shoes go, I give them away unless it’s a memorable game,” Jordan wrote. “I have the shoes from the 69-point game against Cleveland in 1990. The 63-point game against Boston in the 1986 playoffs, I have those too, and I’ve kept my shoes from every championship game.”
Why Jordan refused to wear the same pair twice
Jordan had a very valid reason to keep the shoes he wore during special games. As it turned out, the six-time champion also had a surprisingly simple and relatable reason why he preferred putting on a new pair of shoes every night. Like anyone else, Jordan said he wanted to feel new. And that’s the vibe and energy that a fresh pair gave him.
“I wear a different pair of shoes every night… Anybody that goes out and buys something new, let’s say a new pair of shoes or a new suit, you feel good about it. I wanted to feel that way every game those too,” Mike further divulged.
That admission sounds almost natural, considering it came from someone whose signature shoes eventually became cultural icons.
But that’s how Jordan’s mentality works. The smallest details could become an important part of his preparation. Other players may not pay much attention to their shoes coming into the game, but for MJ, a new pair gives him the feeling of going out there with something fresh even when everything else about game night seems familiar.
Jordan also had his favorites
The Air Jordan line had already changed basketball footwear forever by the time MJ reached his peak as a player. What began with the Air Jordan 1 in 1985 quickly evolved into one of the most recognizable sneaker lines in the world.
With dozens of Air Jordan models attached to his name, choosing a favorite pair should have been easy. However, Michael himself once admitted that it wasn’t. Jordan said he couldn’t just pick one favorite out of all of them. He had several on his list.
“It’s hard [to choose], you know, it’s like saying which one of your kids you like the most. [Jordan] 11s are my favorite, 3s are my next favorite, and probably 12 or 13 come in third,” MJ said.
Jordan has long been officially retired. However, it’s safe to say his shoes were about more than fashion. Some represented championships. Others remind him of his historic nights, and a few symbolize the feeling he wanted every time he walked onto the hardwood.

That explains why the specific pairs MJ kept mattered so much to him.
