Miami nurse suspended after being accused of grabbing a child’s behind

Being arrested on a charge of lewd and lascivious molestation on a child under 12 got a Miami Lakes’ advanced practical registered nurse’s license suspended on Thursday.

And, what did 61-year-old Luis Vandama Brizuela say when Hialeah police asked him about the accusations, according to their arrest report?

“[Vandama] said he began drinking that morning at approximately 11 a.m. and does not remember anything that occurred the rest of the day,” the arrest report said.

Vandama pleaded not guilty to both the aforementioned lewd and lascivious charge and a charge of lewd and lascivious conduct on a child of 16 by a person over 18. No bond was granted on the molestation charge, so Vandama has remained in the custody of Miami-Dade Corrections since his May 28 arrest.

Before Thursday’s emergency suspension order from state Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, Vandama maintained a clean record on the license he gained May 3, 2020. Though his online profile shows an official license address at a medical professional building in Plantation, the suspension order lists his address of record as being a Miami Lakes residence.

Vandama’s accuser lives about a few miles south.

One Saturday in Hialeah

According to an arrest report, an 11-year-old girl’s mother told Hialeah police that Vandama, a relative, came by the house on March 21, a Saturday, to “help move furniture.” After he left, she said, her daughter “told her (Vandama) touched her inappropriately throughout the time he was at their home.”

The mother asked her daughter where Vandama touched her.

“She said he grabbed her waist to kiss her neck,” the arrest report said, “he felt on her bottom, and he kissed her between her breasts.”

This was on April 2. On May 28, Hialeah police asked Vandama to speak with him and, the arrest report says, he came by the police station around 5:30 p.m. When detectives brought Vandama into the interview room and informed him of his Miranda rights, he availed himself of his right to remain silent. Hearing the charges, the arrest report said, changed Vandama’s mind.

Vandama’s account, according to the arrest report: He got to the house on March 21, went in with a key the child’s mother and grandmother had given him and “began drinking that morning at approximately 11 a.m. and does not remember anything that occurred the rest of the day.”

And, the next day, when he went back to the house, the girl’s mother and grandmother approached him with the accusations from the girl.

“(Vandama) said he explained to them that he did not remember doing or saying anything the night before due to his inebriation and apologized for his behavior,” the arrest report said.
