Miami-Dade deputies ask for help identifying man who set gas pump on fire

Authorities are searching for a man who is accused of setting a pump on fire early Thursday at a Chevron gas station, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.

Surveillance footage showed the unidentified man walking to the gas station with a bag and a cardboard sign reading, “Cuban Lives Matter End Embargo,” the sheriff’s office said in a Tuesday statement. He walked up to pump 2, placed a bag with a bottle in it on top of the pump and set the pump on fire.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. at the Chevron gas station located at 8698 SW 40th St. The suspect allegedly fled south on SW 87th Avenue from Bird Road afterward.

He was described as wearing a dark-colored hooded sweater, dark-colored pants and shoes, a white arm band with black stripes on his left arm and gloves, the sheriff’s office said.

Anyone that can identify the man or has information about the case can contact Deputy G. Roa at (305) 994-1000 or Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS, the sheriff’s office said. If the tip leads to an arrest, the tipster may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.
