Man is arrested in Miami two years after person was killed in Alabama: police

A man was arrested in Miami this week in connection with a 2024 Alabama murder, according to the Birmingham Police Department.

Two years ago, Deundray Cottrell was reported missing on the Fourth of July, police said in a Facebook post. Cottrell was found dead two days later in the East Precinct area of Birmingham, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Julian Taylor Morris, who is accused of murdering Cottrell, was arrested Monday by the U.S. Marshals Service in Miami, police said. Morris, 33, of Jonesboro, Georgia, was being held Wednesday at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center pending extradition to Alabama.

A spokesperson for the Birmingham Police Department didn’t respond Wednesday to a request for additional information about the case. Morris will be held without bond, police said.

“This arrest, as well as the other arrest on cases from previous years, show how relentless our department is and how dedicated our officers are. We never stop working for justice,” Birmingham Chief of Police Michael Pickett said in the statement. “We will continue to pursue those responsible for violent crimes, no matter where they may run. We will continue to seek justice for Deundray Cottrell and his family and remain committed to holding those responsible accountable.”
