Kyle Shanahan Gives Injury Updates on Several 49ers Players Following Week 2

The San Francisco 49ers looked outstanding on Sunday as they defeated the Miami Dolphins, 35-13, but they saw several of their key players sustain injuries.

Wide receiver Mike Evans left the game early with a hip ailment, and wideout Demarcus Robinson suffered an ankle injury, as did rookie defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. In addition, rookie defensive lineman Romello Height broke his hand.

The Niners were already without defensive ends Mykel Williams and Sam Okuayinonu, defensive tackle Alfred Collins and wideouts De’Zhaun Stribling, Christian Kirk and Ricky Pearsall coming into Week 2. They will face the Arizona Cardinals this coming Sunday, and not all of the men who got hurt in Week 2 may miss that next contest, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

According to Shanahan, Robinson and Thompson have high ankle sprains and will likely miss several weeks of action. He also said Robinson could go on injured reserve.

“Any time it’s a high ankle, we don’t have a timeline, but high ankles in general are anywhere from three weeks at the best, which is very rare, to six weeks,” Shanahan said, via 49ers Webzone. “So, we’ll see how it goes, but most likely he’ll be an IR candidate here.”

But the news wasn’t all bad. Shanahan said that Evans will need to be managed throughout this week, which makes it sound as if he could play in Week 3. Height, who recorded his first NFL sack versus Miami, will undergo surgery on Tuesday, but he may be able to play this weekend.

“An outside chance to be ready for the game Sunday, but he needs to get surgery on that tomorrow,” Shanahan said of Height.

The coach also said that Williams, who has been out since tearing his ACL in Week 9 of last season, could return to practice next week. The second-year defensive end is on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and isn’t eligible to return to game action until Week 5.

Kirk is on injured reserve due to a calf injury, and the earliest he can come back is also Week 5. San Francisco will visit the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, the team that knocked it out of the divisional round of last season’s playoffs, in Week 5.
