Florida primaries are done, but November elections are on the horizon

Tuesday night’s Florida primaries saw wins, upsets and surprises.

But now that primaries are over, there is still work to be done. Floridians must show up to the polls to elect their next senator, congressional representatives, governor and a host of other elected officials come November.

Here’s a brief election edition of how election results shook up throughout the state and in South Florida.

In a divisive contest that found race and representation at the center, Debbie Wasserman Schultz ran and won her congressional bid for District 20, a seat initially created to give Black residents in South Florida representation. Wasserman Schultz was up against for Black candidates, including Uncle Luke and former Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who split the vote after mulling the idea of coalecing around one candidate.

Democratic socialist Angie Nixon bests Vindman in Democratic Senate primary

Progressive Democrat Angie Nixon won the party’s nomination for U.S. Senate, edging out the well-known and well-funded Alexander Vindman, who rose to prominence as a witness during President Donald Trump’s first impeachment trial. She faces Ashley Moody in November.
