Flight delays continue at MIA as investigation into Amazon crash continues
Congestion at Miami International Airport on Friday was easing even as many travelers were still experiencing delays five days after a deadly cargo-plane crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration maintained its ground delay advisory for MIA, saying there was an average delay of 1 hour and 56 minutes “due to disabled aircraft on runway,” said the regulator’s website at 4:30 p.m.
That’s an improvement from the average delay of about four hours, the FAA reported earlier in the week.
All flights were halted at Miami International Airport on Sunday, Sept. 6, after an Amazon cargo plane overshot its landing and crashed, hitting several vehicles and catching on fire. Five people were killed.
The following day, the National Transportation Board arrived and has been investigating the crash of the Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767-300, operated by 21 Air. The aircraft remains on part of the runway.
“We have no timeline for the aircraft to be relocated,” an MIA spokesperson told the Miami Herald on Friday.
Currently, two of MIA’s four runways, 8L and 9, remain fully open. The other two had been closed immediately following the crash. Now, runway 12 remains closed while 8R is partially open “only for eastbound departures,” the MIA official said. .
MIA had no cancellations according to Flight Aware as of 4 p.m. Friday. The airport’s own flight tracker showed only a handful of canceled flights, a big improvement from earlier in the week.

However, flight delays continue.
On Friday, MIA had 296 delays (121 departures and 175 arrivals), according to Flight Aware as of about 4 p.m.
For those thinking of using Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport as an alternative, travelers there also face delays. FLL has had 187 delays on Friday, per Flight Aware, 111 departures and 76 arrivals.
Travelers are encouraged to check on flight status with their airlines.
One of Miami International Airport’s flight trackers shows a list of all expected arrivals and departures with options to use a drop-down menu to narrow results. It shows the carrier, flight number and where the plane is going to or coming from. It also gives real-time updates on the flight’s arrival or departure status, which concourse the terminal is in, and the location of baggage claim.
MIA’s other flight tracker tool lets you track by flight or route. If you know the carrier, the date and the flight number, this tool might be easier to use since it will only pull the information for your flight.
Additionally, MIA has several ways to check flights, including a list of airlines, their door number, departure concourse, check-in counter location and baggage-claim area. The airport also has a mobile app.
FLL also has trackers to check your flight.
FLL’s flight tracker works by flight or route. You’ll need to know the date, along with the airline carrier and flight number or the departure and arrival airport. The tool also gives people the option to see a list of all expected arrivals and departures and details on the flight’s terminal and baggage claim, too. You can also check your flight status with the airline directly, which might be easier to do through the airline’s app. But you can also check via the airline’s website.
