Fins vs. 49ers live updates: 49ers beat Dolphins, 35-13 after late Willis TD throw

First Dolphins touchdown of the day

The Dolphins scored only their second touchdown of the season — and first of day — when Malik Willis threw a beautiful 77-yard bomb to Ryan Miller with under three minutes left in the game. That gave Willis 197 passing yards (and 14 for 23 accuracy) and lifted his passer rating on the day to 103.

The Dolphins picked up Miller off waivers before the season largely because of his special teams acumen.

Douglas departs with injury

Midway through the fourth quarter, rookie receiver Caleb Douglas limped off the field with an ankle injury. The Dolphins listed him as questionable to return.

Dolphins force a punt!

It’s a miracle! Miami forced a 49ers punt, early in the fourth quarter, after San Francisco scored touchdowns on its first five possessions of the game. Brock Purdy was called for intentional grounding on third down, the first time all day that Miami’s defense got the 49ers offense off the field against their will.

49ers score 21 in third quarter

The San Francisco 49ers scored two touchdowns on the team’s two possessions in the third quarter, building a 28-6 lead.

Tight end George Kittle, who had a quiet first half, opened up the first drive of the third quarter with a 40-yard reception, then concluded that that series with a 12-yard touchdown pass he caught on linebacker Willie Gay Jr.’s loose coverage.

When the 49ers regained possession, fullback Kyle Juszczyk became Brock Purdy’s primary weapon, and concluded that 4-play, 65-yard series with a 6-yard touchdown catch.

After Bradley Pinion botched a punt by fumbling the ball the 49ers concluded a two-play, 28 yard drive with a Christian McCaffrey 1-yard touchdown, which built the 39ers lead to 35-6.

MIA adds another FG before halftime

The Dolphins find themselves down 14-6 at halftime despite having more yards (165 to 125) and dominating time of possession (19:17 to 10:43).

Unfortunately, penalties (five for 30 yards to one for 15) have doomed Miami when it matters most.

The result has been field goals, like the 23-yard shot that Riley Patterson chipped in just as the half expired, instead of touchdowns.

NINERS SCORE AGAIN

Make that 2 for 2.

The Niners scored on their second drive of the day, going 71 yards in eight plays.

Quarterback Brock Purdy punched it in with two-yard scramble to increase the Niners’ lead to 14-3.

DOLPHINS ANSWER

It’s almost as if feeding De’Von Achane is a good thing.

The star running back was featured heavily on Miami’s 17-play, 63-yard drive that ended with field goal.

Niners still up 7-3.

NINERS STRIKE FIRST:

Who else but Christian McCaffrey?

The star running back punched it in from the 1-yard line for the first score of the day.

Niners up 7-0.

INACTIVES:

The Dolphins will be without their top pass rusher in Chop Robinson.

He suffered a concussion during the practice week.

Also inactive: wide receiver Jalen Tolbert, cornerback Marcellas Dial Jr., guard DJ Campbell, tackle Chukwuebuka Godrick, tight end Justin Joly as well as Brady Cook, who will serve as the emergency third quarterback.

Robinson’s absence puts more pressure on edges Josh Uche, Robert Beal Jr., Malik Herring and Clelin Ferrell.
