Drunk drivers who killed man asleep in bed and another driving charged: deputies

Months after two drunk drivers took the lives of two men, one sleeping at home and another simply driving, deputies shared that both criminal cases ended in the arrests of the drivers on Wednesday.

Kareem Omar Johnson, 34, is facing charges of DUI manslaughter and reckless vehicular homicide. Allen Matis, 67, is also facing charges of DUI manslaughter and reckless vehicular homicide. As of Thursday, both men were still held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Neither of the men’s lawyers immediately responded to requests for comments.

The first killing occurred on the night of May 9, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said.

An unidentified man was driving in the area of Northwest 22nd Avenue and 50th Street when Johnson slammed into the side of him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators learned Johnson blew through a red light and hit the man’s car. He was also found to be under the influence of both alcohol and marijuana, the sheriff’s office said.

In the other case, Matis was speeding in a 2025 Cadillac Lyriq in the area of Southwest 57th Avenue and 29th Street during the late evening of June 24, deputies said. He drove through a stop sign and slammed into a home.

Henri Bezy, 82, was sleeping inside when Matis came crashing in, trapping him under the car.

Investigators learned Matis accelerated from 0 to 43 mph in the seconds before the crash. His car’s data also showed the accelerator was 99% pressed down, and the brakes were not used.

Bezy died in the home. His causes of death were blunt-force trauma and traumatic asphyxia, Matis’ arrest report read.

Deputies said Matis was drunk during the crash, with a blood sample almost four times over the legal alcohol limit.
